Three car loads of Roosevelt debate students gambled on the weather and produced a tremendous performance at Omaha this weekend:
Univ of Nebraska-Millard North Public Forum Round Robin Invitational: On Friday 12 national level teams competed in the round robin. Roosevelt was represented by Murphy Burke and Lily Nellans. The girls were beaten in rd two by Milipas (San Jose, CA) and in rd four by Freemont (NE)
They swept three others but fell one ballot short of the semi final round.
Saturday results:
Congressional Debate: Henry Wimber was runner-up; Claire Wallace was 3rd, Jacob Thompson 6th.
Varsity Policy: Max Pilcher and Jacob Appel went 3-1 in four rounds seeding in quarters which were not held because of time. As it was the policy tournament didn't end until after 11pm.
Public Forum Debate: Two Roosevelt teams cleared to octo finals: Elena Hildebrant and Andy Anderson had their best performances of the season. They had the mis-fortune of facing Burke and Nellans in quarters. Coaches choose to send on the seniors since Valley won their quarter final and we wanted to send a strong message to Valley's top PF team that we will destroy them at All Iowa Finals. Burke and Nellans responded with a 3-0 win over Freemont, NE in semi finals and walloped Valley in the finals. Valley just crumbled under a relentless assault from Roosevelt in the finals. The judge's oral comments were just a stinging embarrassment to Valley. Message sent.
I have never seen a PF team win every single ballot in a TOC level tournament but that happened this weekend for Roosevelt as Burke and Nellans won every single ballot in route to the championship--a very strong performance! A field which had high quality teams from Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Wisconsin and Illinois was no match for the senior girls this weekend.
Great job this weekend by the Riders.
