Plans for Novice Nationals

This is important so please read carefully!

1).  We want permission slips to travel...please do not forget!
2).  There are 4 drivers:  Hayward, Nellans, Strong and Courard-Hauri
3).  We have exactly enough seats in the four vehicles...pack light!

Students may store luggage in the debate office early Friday am if they want to.

Departure time is about 11-11:15am from the North Parking Lot...students at Central need to ride the bus back to Roosevelt to meet the rides.

We will drive and eat lunch at Culver's in Newton and then head to Iowa City West High School.

Sleeping arrangements have been made for all students and student judges with Iowa City West families of debate students.  We have done this successfully for a number of years.  PLEASE MAKE SURE A THANK YOU NOTE IS LEFT AND A GOOD IMPRESSION OF ROOSEVELT IS MADE.  Free accommodations are hard to come by and these families are most willing to host us based on previous year's experiences.  In return you might be asked to help host Iowa City West someday.

Your family will feed you in the morning and return you to Iowa City West in time to begin debate Saturday am.

Drivers are to return to Iowa City West no later than 5:30pm.  We will leave when we can..we could have students in late out rounds or maybe not.  If it works out we will eat dinner in the Amana Colonies at the Ox Yoke Inn.

This is a Novice Nats tradition.  Yes there is the cultured swine course.  If a student is really a vegetarian or if for religious purposes a student cannot eat pork that is fine.  Otherwise there is an expectation of upholding a long standing novice tradition!  No American food is to be consumed--it must be German.  That means no chicken strips, hamburgers, etc.  Students do not want to face their team with reports of NOT having participated in the tradition.  Otherwise, I would fear for what you will be served at the banquet in May!

We will call ahead when we know an arrival time at Roosevelt...pick up is in the north parking lot.  We would expect getting back between 9 and ten.

Coach Harry will be staying at the Fairfield Inn in Iowa City.  You can reach me on my cell phone at 515-202-4078.

Expectations:  Perfect behaviour in the tournament and while student housed.  No complaining about results.  Have fun...this is now your class of novices together...have fun.  Support one another...it's important

Parents:  We may know in advance or might not know in advance of where your student will be staying.  Make sure they call you with their accommodations and a home phone number if we can't get it posted on the blog!

Thank you Nellans, Haywards and Courard-Hauri's for driving!!!!!!!
