Amelia Martin advised me today that she was not only accepted at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA but won a SCHOLAR'S SCHOLARSHIP worth $25K annually to attend! She had already been accepted by the Mason Forensic's program for next year and is likely to pick up some additional college help to compete.
Amelia accomplished something else at Mason no Roosevelt student in debate has done yet by winning the Scholar's scholarship. That places her in the Top 40 of the admissions class. Sam Fairfield (now at Grinnell) and Billy Strong (at Mason) won Honor's scholarships which are reserved for the next 60 in the admissions class academically.
I know the Mason coaches will be very excited when they get their copy of the notification to Amelia. She is likely to get a little more incentive to compete for the Patriot's next fall and join another Billy in the nation's second ranked program. WOW!
Mason is a Virginia State school with an emphasis on Economics and Government located in the DC suburbs in Northern Virginia. The scholars and honors programs provide separate student housing, smaller class sizes, the highest level professors, a fast track program to graduation to accommodate law school or a master's program and more. It is meant to be somewhat equal to an Ivy League education. The success rate of Mason graduates in these two programs is amazing.
What a neat opportunity for Amelia is she chooses to accept their offer. This just made the Purdue scholarship she won look a little small by comparison.
