The Extemp Central National Points Race is a competition designed to reward extempers for placing high at selected national circuit competitions throughout the year. Tournaments are placed into five tiers based on their level of prestige and each tier awards a different amount of points towards the top six finishers (CFL and NFL Nationals award points for semi-finalists). To find out what point value tournaments are worth, check out the first issue of The Ex Files on the tab above. At the end of the season, the winner of the National Points Race will receive a customary glass trophy recognizing their achievement courtesy of Extemp Central.
Extemp Central also sponsors a National Team Points Race competition. When extempers compete and place highly at selected tournaments they earn points for themselves and their school. In the case of a tie, the number of finalists schools have had throughout the year is used as a tiebreaker.
The George Mason University Patriot Games, a fourth tier tournament, awarded a total of 281 points to the six extempers who made it to the final round. Dillon Huff of Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas won the tournament (as well as its round robin) and the 70 points awarded to him for winning the tournament combined with the 40 points he secured as the top extemper at St. Marks has vaulted him over Glenbrooks winner Steven Elliott of Lakeville North High School in Lakeville, Minnesota to get possession of the top spot. Mirza Germovic of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa became the third extemper this year to secure points at two National Points Race tournaments by placing fourth at George Mason to accompany a previous top six finish at St. Marks. As a result, he moved into the top fifteen in the rankings. Aside from Huff and Germovic’s moves, the rest of the standings were pretty stable from the top five up although Oscar Wang of San Marino High School and Jamie Mohan of Danville High School debut in the top ten after placing in the top three at George Mason.

Here are the team points race standings after the George Mason University Patriot Games. Although San Marino High School in San Marino, California has not secured a title at a National Points Race tournament this season, its two extempers, Nabeel Zewail and Oscar Wang have proven more than capable by taking second place at the Yale University Invitational and the George Mason University Patriot Games. These two performances at fourth tier tournaments have moved San Marino up from 8th in the last set of rankings into the top spot. Dillon Huff’s individual performances this season have put Southlake Carroll High School in Texas a mere ten points behind. Although there is a three-way tie for 10th in points, Jackson High School in Ohio has the tenth place spot because of the first tiebreaker which is number of finalists. Their two finalists at the Wake Forest National Early Bird at the start of the semester is what keeps them ahead of Durham Academy in North Carolina and Danville High School in Kentucky.

A massive showdown is on the horizon with the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin in Nashville, Tennessee being a second tier tournament and awarding 150 points to the winner. The top six finishers at MBA will receive National Points Race points. Considering the fact that 13 extempers in the 16 extemper field at MBA have received points this season in the National Points Race (Shahid Ahmed sits 2.5 points outside of the top 15 in a tie for 17th place), early January will provide a significant shakeup in the standings and could possibly enable Dillon Huff or Steven Elliott to establish more distance between themselves and the rest of the field. Also, San Marino High School and Lakeville North High School are in the unique position of having two extempers in the MBA field, which has become something of a rarity based on past years. As a result, if they were to place two people inside of the top six it would enable them to secure a sizeable amount of points toward the National Team Points Race.
