Here is a summary of the Lincoln Railsplitter Tournament results. There were several extraordinary performances this weekend--I'm not sure which was the best but consider:
1). Emily Schott was 7th in an open field of mixed novice/varsity LD debaters
2). Mirza Germovic edges Billy Strong for the extemp title!
3). Hallie Hudson is 6th in DI!
4). Tess Yocum is 6th in OI!
5). First time junior PF speaker Lillian Chesser earns speak points of 29, 30, and 30 to set up Billy for the closes and they produce a 3-1 record for 6th place!
6). Myisha McClachan continues to rapidly improve with her OI finishing 9th in a field of 26.
7). Mirza and Adele Crane could have been 2nd in PF but dropped a very close decision in their last round and dropped to 10th.
I listed all of that to demostrate a point...the youth of this team is doing very, very well.
Congratulations to each of you.
PF: Combined Roosevelt record was 19-15--a bit low. Had there not been a round 4 the record would have been: 17-10. We lost strength--I could see it before the round started--and actually made a couple of kids go get something to eat. No excuses here--there were several others who didn't eat during this tournament. If you don't like tournament food, bring something with you to help you compete. We should have finished about 22-12 or better. Billy was top speaker.
LD: Way to go Emily, our only entry
Congress: Liz was Varsity PO award winner; freshmen Sam Roeder, Sarah Larsen and Harrison Hayward went 4-5-8 in a huge novice house.
Extemp: Mizra 1, Billy 2, Amelia 4, Olivia, Adele and Chris Oman were 7th and Taylor Karns 8th.
OI: Top 5 were Iowa City West but Tess got 6th, Cady 8th and Myisha 9th out of 26 students entered.
DI: Hallie 6th and Tess 10th.
All other speech students were 11th or greater in their fields.
