Congratulations to the 28 students who competed at IHSSA this past weekend on a huge showing. Every student produced sweep points (amazing) and those points were needed because Dowling came prepared to win.
Congratulations to senior Luke Theuma on his State Championship--to Junior Emma Weddle as State Runner-up--to senior Reid Wade as a state semi finalist--to seniors Murphy Burke and Lily Nellans as State Quarter Finalist--to sophomore Marlee Rutledge and junior Elena Hildabrandt as Octo-finalists.
Congrats to Senior Max Pilcher and Junior Ted Appel on their quarters showing and #3 seed overall!
But a special congratulations to the Congress Debate team which amassed an unbelievable 106 sweep points and crushed the field: Theuma was champion, junior Henry Winber was third, freshman Rachel Wade was a Superior Senator, Junior Jenna Pokorny was a Superior Senator, Sophomore Jane Rice was a Senator of Excellence as was freshman Claire Wallace.
Over the past five years Roosevelt has been Runner-Up, Champion, Champion, Runner-Up, and this year Champion.
The Big Ass Trophy (named by Wunn at Ankeny 16 years ago) resides at Roosevelt again.
What beat Dowling was the quality of our depth-it was that simple with a twist in our lineup moving Reid Wade to LD debate from Policy. Weddle and Wade were fantastic in the State field in LD which prevented anyone else from a major run. 22 POINTS WERE EARNED BY STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T ADVANCE IN THE TOURNAMENT...DON'T THINK THEY DIDN'T MATTER?
