You may have or may not have heard from your student that there was a fatal traffic accident--and a particularly gruesome one at that n front of Central around 11 am this morning. Grand Avenue remains closed. As best as we know, a driver of a vehicle (believed to have been a Roosevelt student) struck a motorcycle (believed not to have been a DMPS student) and the accident was fatal to the driver of the cycle. One of our students provided a name of the RHS student, and if accurate, it was not a debate student.
What I do know is that a number of Roosevelt debate students were in the vicinity of the accident and apparently a few were witnesses. There was no help from Central apparently despite calls to the building for the SRO and nurse. The first aid on the scene was the fire department and by then apparently the driver of the motorcycle had apparently bled to death.
I am posting this so you know of the accident, know that your student may or may not have seen it or might have been exposed to the death of the motor cycle driver.
Students have counseling available to them if they need it...both at Central and Roosevelt. If students happen to arrive to practice shook up from the accident-I will refer them to counseling here.
