First of all students are released after third block on Thursday. I know there are a couple kids demanding seat time at Central. But the problem is that we have to get changed--they have to drive themselves to Valley Southwoods and none of them know where that is in West Des Moines, eat etc.
Further because we can win a State TEAM championship in speech (or we might not) coaches also decided to isolate kids Thursday night at the Hampton Inn in West Des Moines. Cost is around $40..maybe a bit less.
We are not isolating the debate kids Friday night because there is no reason to do so as the tournament will be in prelims come Sat am. But speech will start at 7:30 on Friday am with semi final rounds and we need to get up, eat, dress, warm up, etc. before those rounds. Knowing what will happen that kids will run late, etc., on Friday am we have chosen to hotel it. The kids allknew this last week.
The Hotel:
7060 Lake Dr West Des Moines, IA 50266
(515) 223-4700
We have only a few rides available from Roosevelt to the Hampton when third block is over.
The expectation is that kids will find their own way--share rides to the Hampton. The tournament Thursday
is at Valley Southwoods and Friday am at the Hampton.
Valley Southwoods is at:
625 S 35th St West Des Moines, IA 50265(515) 633-4500
To get there take 235 West and exit south on Valley West Drive stay n Valley Drive South as it turns into Mills civic Parkway
south of EP True. Take a left on South 35th and drive past the WDM Library, the Lake on the right side, up the hill, all the way
past Southwoods. Turn into the complex (to the right) once you have past the high school on your right.
Parents are welcome to hang around although do not watch your student compete WITHOUT their permission.
Awards for Speech about 1pm on Friday at the Hampton. Speech students will miss school all day Friday.
Likewise, debate students are excused after 7th block on Friday to go the the Southwoods complex in
West Des Moines. Students are expected to get themselves there at 300 for a 3:45 start to round one.
