Parents and Students: NOW is the time to be thinking about attending a summer speech or debate camp. There are many outstanding camps available. While RHS debate has a preference to certain camps--that preference is only based on the results we have seen. We know the teaching level is high at those camps.
Deadlines are approaching for certain camps. If (and you should) you have an interest in participating in a camp this summer, be sure you have spoken to Coach Nate or myself. We would be pleased to speak with parents about camps and associated costs. Last year 18 Roosevelt students took advantage of summer camps. It was hard work for everyone and it was fun for everyone.
Camps are not a requirement to participate in debate nor are they a requirement to succeed in debate. Camps are a fun way to learn a lot about the activity in a setting which allows the student to experience (usually) a college campus. While we teach much of what camps teach, the difference is small labs, considerable focus with a staff of usually 1 instructor per 8 or less students; and a lot of practice and lots of fun with speech and debate students from all over the country.
Camp scholarships: Some camps offer those who need some financial help some scholarship help. Remember that money goes quickly. We have been fortunate in the past at RHS to have some left over money each summer we can allocate for camps. That may not be the case this year. (While too early to know--it will be tight). Secondly, Roosevelt usually has available some one time $250 foundation scholarships available to help with such a trip. Loretta Miller handles those requests.
If you are a new student, have a high degree of interest in debate, ask any of our students about what they did for camp last year.
