BRIC Nations thoughts

Brazil, Russia, India and China comprise the BRIC nations--the topic of the Feb PFD resolution.
Some things to think about in preparation: These nations comprise 42% of the worlds population and a huge % of the worlds poorest population. BRIC does meet in summit economic meetings by themselves. They have produced as much as 70% of the world's economic growth of late. (Note growth not total output).

They are the focus of any firm (esp technology) seeking massive new users of their products such as mobile phones. They are the source of massive amts of US investments.

Problems: Population growth; feeding massive numbers of indigents; finding work for massive numbers of indigents; differences between the BRIC members and WAR/TERRORISM/STABILITY issues. Lack of the economic structures needed to maintain rapid growth (stable banking systems, etc).

Of the 4 only India is not a major energy producer. Of the 4 India has the best education system but leaves hundreds of millions without any education. India lives with constant terrorism issues from Muslims, as does Russia and China but Muslims extremists are far more focused on India's Hindus and the Kashmir. Brazil is energy independent because of their massive ethanol production--they don't need gasoline. Yet Brazil sits on a recently discovered massive amount of oil just off their Atlantic Coast.

China and Russia face huge political issues internally. Brazil is NOT a nuclear weapons nation. While China and Russia try to play world super power, India and Brazil seem not to have such a political interest in world affairs. Yet India is now a space country having recently launched an unmanned moon mission. The US is HEAVILY tied to each of these nations economically. We import huge amounts from China...buy a lot of Russian energy, buy a lot of imports from India and we are Brazil's largest trading partner. China will soon be India's largest trading partner replacing the United States.

Just some basic thoughts as you prepare. Billy is putting together a primer and case thoughts. I'm sure Sam will be as well. Thanks, Coach Harry
