Yesterday Des Moines Schools announced that 21 DMPS students earned National AP Scholar Awards--and a large number of the winners were from Roosevelt including 3 in our debate program!
Congratulations to Olivia Sandbothe, Liz McCabe and Billy Strong. Each will get their pictures permanently displayed at both Roosevelt and Central as a result of the high academic honor.
As each of you begin to prepare college thoughts remember there is a NFL award which can be of value in the admission process: The Academic All American Award. It's requirements are an ACT test score of 27 or equivalent on the SAT; a grade point average of 3.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale and recommendations from your head coach and principal. You also need 750 or more NFL points to be eligible.
An application can be processed by the end of your 5th semester (middle of junior year). If you think you are eligible or have questions about the award, please see me about it so we can begin the paperwork. I cannot access your test scores so you have to see me about the award.
In recent years, Sam Fairfield, Billy Strong and Olivia Sandbothe have earned the award. We have had a number of students JUST MISS earning the award and I mean just missed.
In two cases, the winning of the Academic All American Award greatly enhanced scholarships for the student winning the award. So the award has more than just a recognition value--it could mean $$$ to help pay for college.
I believe we have a number of candidates for the Academic All American Award this year and next year. This award should be a goal of every student in the program because winning an Academic All American Award can be of huge value to you in the college application process.
