The Valley Mid American Cup is a National Select Varsity Tournament hosted by Valley High in West Des Moines each September. There are 6 coveted awards--the 3 championship gavels and the 3 best speaker award gavels. Roosevelt finally won one of those awards and nearly won 2 of them.
Billy Strong was named Best Speaker in Public Forum Debate. His huge gavel award, the Mid-American Cup Tradition, will be on display in the office this week. Additionally Billy and his partner Chris Oman just missed the final round of Public Forum losing to Okoboji on a an insane 2-1 split decision in the semi final round. Okoboji would lose to Dowling in the finals. Roosevelt was the only team to defeat Dowling in the tournament.
The Roosevelt team of Olivia Sandbothe and Mirza Germovik advanced, unbeaten and ranked #1 into quarterfinals but were upset 3-0 in quarters by Des Moines Lincoln.
The Roosevelt team of Billy Strong and Chris Oman advanced into elims on a 5-1 record, seeded #2 and were defeated by Okoboji in Semi finals.
The Roosevelt team of Amelia Martin and Adele Crane failed to qualify to out rounds finishing 3 wins and 3 losses. A special tribute is due Amelia who debated all weekend with her father in ICU at Mercy following Thursday and Friday evening emergency surgeries. Her father was doing well in his recovery as of last evening.Overall, we opened with a 15-6 record in our first tournament.
Congratulations to all 6 of these students! And a special thanks to Coach Nate who got up Sunday at 4am to write some blocks for our teams use at 8am Sunday morning.
